General Summary:

The National Commodity Tax Team provides legislative advice, guidance and direction to all of the business units within Loblaws Inc. and to some of the related companies, to ensure that the company is compliant with the Federal and Provincial commodity tax legislation within Canada. Members of the team are considered to be subject matter experts on commodity tax legislation and regulations. For any commodity tax government audits of Loblaws Inc or related companies noted above, the first point of contact will be the commodity tax team. The commodity tax team reports to the VP of Financial Operations within Finance

Job Requirements:

• Thoroughly, completely and accurately analyze large volumes of data/information to determine patterns of compliance or non-compliance with commodity tax legislation including ability to make conclusions based on the analysis performed. Includes communication of these observations and conclusions in an easy to understand format for the “user” of the analysis

• Preparing and filing periodic GST/HST and QST returns, as well as performing reasonability analysis on the tax accounts

• Provide “basic to intermediate” commodity tax advice, guidance, direction to all business units on commodity tax legislation, federal and provincial and any changes thereto as it pertains to the “real time” transactions of the business units

• Active member, as a subject matter expert, of any project team that implements required system process changes to be compliant with commodity tax legislation

• Assists and supports management team in negotiation and resolution with respect of commodity tax issues with all government audits from the “information gathering” to the “final assessment” stage including payment/recovery of commodity taxes

• Develops process improvements and controls based on identified risks and audit findings provided by external consultants, federal or provincial governments, internal audit team, or self-review conducted by a project team which includes identifying and reports on any significant gaps in existing commodity tax procedures

• Supports management on Internal Control Compliance initiatives and control performance

• Provides support and research to management in order to make informed decisions on all commodity tax related issues

• Participates in various types of audits as necessary

Role Requirements:

• Two to five years experience in commodity tax discipline in a large public company, or in a large private company or in a public accounting firm

• Advanced standing or near completion of earning an accounting designation would be an asset

• Exceptional planning and prioritizing skills

• Ability to effectively manage demanding and at times competing deadlines

• Strong project management skills are required

• Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to effectively interact with all levels of the organization (Sr. Managers, Directors, Vice Presidents)

• Experience in company Mainframe (Legacy) and SAP environment is an asset

• Strong computer software skills in Microsoft products mainly Excel (intermediate-advanced level), MS Access Data Base (intermediate -advanced level), Audit Command Language (intermediate to advanced level) software would be an asset

• Superior attention to detail

• Strong customer focus

• Bilingual language (English and French) skills are considered an asset

• Ability to travel overnight, on occasion, as needed
