Summary This is a shared position between University of Michigan Libraries and William L. Clements Library (50% time at each - you will work alternating weeks between each institution) reporting to Clements Library's Senior Associate Curator of Books and the UM Library's Digital Conversion Production Manager.The University of Michigan Library in Ann Arbor is one of the world's largest academic research libraries and serves a vibrant University community that is home to 19 schools and colleges, 100 top ten graduate programs, and annual research expenditures approaching $1.5 billion. The Digital Photographer is a staff position versed in digital photography and other digitization techniques and equipment for still 2D and 3D books, manuscripts, maps, photos, negatives, slides, and more. The William L. Clements Library collects, preserves, and makes available historical resources about the Americas, with strengths in 18th and 19th century American history. Work will include the digitization and creation of descriptive metadata for primary sources of early American history, including printed texts, handwritten manuscripts, maps, prints, and photographs. Create metadata for digitized archival materials and enter it into spreadsheets. Follow relevant standards such as DACS when creating descriptive metadata (metadata training will be provided). Complete post-processing functions such as color correction and cropping. Use Photoshop to digitally stitch together oversized items that are scanned or photographed in sections. 25% UM Library: Perform photographic and digital imaging work, including 2D/3D and multi-spectral imaging of complex/rare/fragile objects and library materials. Attend project reviews, provide recommendations. Review conservation concerns with materials and apply appropriate handling techniques. Plan production assignments. Review and deliver final products. 10% UM Library: Develop new/modify existing imaging methods and procedures. Plan/implement both quantitative and qualitative quality control procedures for the unit, including device characterization and monitoring, routine equipment calibration, and appropriate inspection procedures. Implement color management routines. Produce/update appropriate documentation and reports. 5% UM Library: Maintain current equipment and perform updates. Determine unit photographic needs; review and recommend equipment purchases for the unit and institution as a whole. Work with colleagues to develop and implement the capture and storage of administrative and technical metadata to support long-term preservation of digital images. 5% UM Library: Participate in outreach. Advise faculty, staff and students on photographic techniques, procedures, and costs. Assist subject collections, development, and marketing with donor relations. Participate in unit tours, presentations, and clinics. Recommend best practices for institutional and local community use. 5% UM Library: Modify procedures to conform with emerging community preservation standards. Participate in committees, conferences, seminars on the latest developments in the photographic and digital imaging field. Advise peers on techniques and procedures. Apply new techniques to unit. Required Qualifications* BFA or MFA in Photography and a minimum of 1-2 years experience in a comparable position, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Demonstrate knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in several photographic techniques, including studio and copy photography, portraiture, candid photography and event coverage, architectural, editorial, and scientific photography, including multi-spectral imaging. Solve unique and difficult photographic issues creatively. Knowledge of the techniques, concepts, methods, materials, software and equipment used in digital imaging, color management, and manipulation of digital files, including demonstrated experience with Adobe Photoshop and other image processing software to create preservation and publication quality digital images. Experience handling rare/archival materials and addressing conservation concerns via digital photography. Knowledge of Windows/Macintosh/Unix operating systems and productivity software to perform digital asset management. Application Deadline Job openings are posted for a minimum of seven calendar days.
