This does not include all of the work requirements of the job. Applicants are required to demonstrate in their applications and in the interview process that will include a skills assessment, that their qualifications for the position match those specified. The City of Belleville is looking for up to five (5) Probationary Fire Fighters to join Belleville Fire and Emergency Services. Working in an Incident Command System, the Firefighter’s role is to protect life and property through firefighting, emergency medical and other types of emergency incidents, often performed under conditions which require strenuous physical exertion. Firefighters are expected to maintain a high standard of professionalism, solve problems, work as part of a dynamic team and possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; as well as being leaders in public fire safety education. Duties and Responsibilities: The successful applicant(s) will work in the Urban Suppression Division. Upon completion of training, you will work under supervision to combat fires, perform rescue operations on land and water, administer designated medical procedures, conduct public education programs, inspect buildings for fire hazards, operate and maintain fire-fighting equipment and fire stations. Minimum Qualifications: NFPA 1001-Fire Fighter I and II certified, education and training program from an accredited institution; or Experience as a firefighter in a career, volunteer or industrial brigade setting. Possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent. Possess valid and current Standard First Aid and CPR certificates. Possess a valid and unrestricted Ontario class “D” driver’s license with a “Z” air brake endorsement and a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Applicants with 3 or more demerit points are ineligible for consideration. A driver’s abstract will be required at the conditional offer stage. Possess a satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening. Please note that successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening as a condition of employment. Have the ability to work cooperatively as a member of an effective and professional team. Have a strong desire to serve the community and a strong work ethic. Pass a medical examination acceptable for the position of firefighter. Reside within a 45-minute commuting distance of Belleville, ON, or willingness to relocate, by the end of the probationary period. Additional Preferred Qualifications: University degree or College diploma. NFPA Operations or Technician Level Certificate in one or more of the following programs: rope rescue, confined space rescue, water/ice rescue, hazmat response. NFPA 1002 Driver/Operator - Pumper NFPA 1031, Level I Fire Inspector Certification. NFPA 1035, Level I Public Educator. NFPA 1033, Fire and Explosion Investigation. Trade apprenticeship or certification. Medical training or experience (i.e. Paramedic, Nursing etc). Emergency Medical Responder certification. Other relevant specialized training, qualifications or experience. Demonstrated community service and/or volunteer involvement. Swim Practical, including assessment of working at heights, strength, conditioning, endurance, and claustrophobia. Knowledge of local demographic, geographic layout, and an understanding of operations for Belleville Fire and Emergency Services. You will be required to bring a copy of your credentials as stated on your resume to the practical assessment for verification. Candidates who successfully pass the Assessment phase, do not automatically qualify for the next stage in the recruitment process. Stage 4: In Person Interviews – The interview panel will consist of City of Belleville Fire and Emergency Services leadership and Human Resources. Stage 5: Selection and Conditional Offer – The hiring committee will discuss the results of the assessments and interviews to select the best candidates for the available position(s). A Conditional Offer of Employment will be made to the successful candidate(s). The offer will be conditional on a satisfactory Driver’s abstract and Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Screening, passing the medical examination and residing within a 45-minute commuting distance from the City of Belleville by the end of the probationary period.
